A structural problem in law firms and legal departments
Lawyers and legal departments want, every day, to serve clients and business teams faster, more efficiently and to a higher standard. But the reality of legal work is that much of it is still manual, and getting output out quickly still takes people. Good lawyers and legal staff are in short supply, hard to hire without paying a premium, expensive to train, and prone to leaving once trained.
On top of that, law firms are typically built as a pyramid: staff handle a task, an associate checks it, a partner reviews and comments, staff revise, the associate checks again, the partner reviews again, and only once approved does the associate send it out. Every step is manual, and everyone involved is busy, so it inevitably takes time. Firms want to respond quickly to clients and business teams, but the structure itself gets in the way. That is why raising the productivity of each individual legal professional has become an urgent problem to solve.
Word is the bottleneck
A colorful, chaotic Word document, and this is one of the tidier examples.
Much of legal work comes down to editing in Word, then going back and forth using tracked changes and comments to convey intent. In practice, what actually determines legal productivity is:
- how cleanly the Word edits are made
- how clearly a comment conveys intent without being misread
- whether drafting stays accurate through repeated rounds of revision
- whether tracked changes stay legible even as they pile up
That is, the quality of editing inside Word itself, on top of the issue-spotting that has to happen first, of course. Legal Agent was built by narrowing in on exactly that: raising the quality of editing inside Word.
No product had ever satisfied me
I tried most of the pre-generative-AI products on the market, and every one of them only produced "generic" output. What practice actually needs is an unusual fix, for an unusual document, in an unusual situation, for an unusual matter, for an unusual client. None of the older products reached the quality bar I wanted, and none of them actually made the work lighter.
Generative AI arrived, but problems remained
Generative AI was different. It can flexibly draft and revise text on instruction, in almost any situation. But general-purpose generative AI still had real problems:
- switching back and forth between a browser and Word is a hassle
- it cannot accurately read existing tracked changes or comments
- in a document with a long revision history, it cannot land a minimal, targeted edit
- tracked changes end up excessive as a result, driving up review and explanation cost
- copying AI output over by hand breaks the flow of work
Until these were solved, I did not think legal work could reach the point of "using this every single day." I was living day to day copying generative-AI output into Word by hand, and asking myself every day: is this actually making my work easier?
Accurate even in a Word file already dense with tracked changes
That is why we built Legal Agent, a Word AI Agent specialized for legal work, around a single idea: give legal professionals a generative-AI experience that stays entirely inside Word for the core legal task of editing and commenting back and forth. One question mattered above all else.
Does this actually make the work dramatically easier?
A product that does not make my own work dramatically easier is not worth offering, and I could never recommend it with confidence. We built Legal Agent around that single test: does it make the work dramatically easier?
It made my own work ten times more efficient
Once I built and started using Legal Agent myself, the efficiency gain was substantial. A two-hour-plus investment-agreement review now takes about twenty minutes. I discuss the issues and direction with the AI, the document gets revised based on that discussion, and the review closes out with about ten minutes of my own checking. Handing over a meeting record and received materials is enough to produce a certified letter in five minutes. Reviewing and drafting English-language contracts is about ninety percent complete once I hand the task to Legal Agent. In effect, handing a task to Legal Agent gets you to a Word file that is already about ninety percent of the way there, and my own work starts from that point.
A dramatic gain in both speed and quality
As a lawyer, I currently act as ongoing counsel to 45 companies, and support more than 80 clients in total once spot matters are included. I return most work within one business day of receiving the request. And I handle every one of those clients by myself. All of this has been possible because using Legal Agent myself raised my own productivity tenfold. I can recommend it with full confidence.
A product built for a specific ideal
Legal Agent is built to make one specific ideal real: "I want to move immediately to push the client's business forward, and to do that I want to be able to hand the work to a genuinely capable associate."
Attach a meeting record from a client call and say "we met with the client, so revise the contract based on what came out of that meeting": the Word file is revised accordingly. Provide a terms-of-service template along with the client's chat messages, a service overview, meeting notes and a comparable set of terms, and say "the client asked for a draft of the terms of service, so check the attached materials and draft it": the terms of service come together.
For a contract that has gone through several rounds with the other side, a single instruction, "we received a revised draft from the other side; check it, make the necessary edits, and add a client-facing comment explaining the changes along with a reply comment to the other side," produces both the edits and the reply comments.
Open an SPA, attach the DD report along with the target company's corporate registry and shareholder register, and say "revise the SPA based on the DD report, and fill in the details from the registry and shareholder register": a draft SPA comes together from the DD findings and the attached materials.
Open a DD report template, apply the drafting rules as a prompt, attach the counterparty's contracts along with past DD reports, and say "summarize the attached contracts in a table using the same approach as the past DD reports, note the risks and mitigations, and follow the DD report's drafting rules": a DD report with tables comes together. Attach meeting minutes and a shareholder register received from the target company and say "summarize the target company's shareholder history from these materials": that history is written into the DD report.
At the contract-finalization stage, attach signatory details and a corporate registry received from the client and say "fill in this contract's signature block from the attached materials": it fills in the signatory information. Attach the counterparty's court filings, a rebuttal, meeting minutes with the client, and supporting evidence, and say "draft a brief based on the attached materials": a brief gets drafted. The same applies to long English-language contracts: attach the client's materials, pass along the client's requests, and say "revise this and add comments": the English contract is revised appropriately.
